A native of South Brazil, the Giant False Agave is a stately plant with a rosette growth habit. Plants can get quite large, up to 3 m in diameter and 1.2 m in height. The edge of the wide strap-like leaves is not sharp like those of the true agave. The more attractive, variegated version of this plant has become a common landscape plant candidate in Singapore.
It is sometimes labelled with another scientific name, Furcraea foetida. It was once grown as a source of fiber and hence another common name, Mauritius hemp and the roots and leaves of this plant also possess medicinal properties.
